A traveller’s guide to Rocky Mountaineer’s routes

Few travel experiences in the world match riding the Rocky Mountaineer train through the heart of Western Canada. With panoramic glass-dome coaches, all-daylight journeys, gourmet cuisine, and scenery that genuinely takes your breath away, it's no surprise this iconic luxury train is consistently rated one of the greatest rail experiences on the planet.

But with four distinct Canadian routes to choose from – and a fifth for those tempted by the American Southwest – choosing the right one isn't always straightforward. At My Canada Trips, we specialise in helping travellers plan the perfect rail holiday in Canada, and this guide is designed to help you find the Rocky Mountaineer route that's perfect for you.

Passage to the Peaks

The newest of Rocky Mountaineer's Canadian routes, Passage to the Peaks is a gem for those who want to travel within the Rockies rather than from the coast. This route, running for a limited time in June 2026, connects the two great national park towns of Banff and Jasper entirely by rail, passing through some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the world.

For travellers already visiting the Canadian Rockies – perhaps as part of a longer self-drive or guided tour – Passage to the Peaks makes a wonderful addition to the itinerary. It's also a superb choice for those who want a shorter Rocky Mountaineer journey, or who would prefer not to travel all the way from Vancouver but still want to experience the magic of the train.

Highlights include dramatic mountain vistas, iconic Rockies landscapes, and the sense of journeying through the very heart of one of the world's great wilderness regions.

Best for: Travellers already basing themselves in the Rockies, those combining Rocky Mountaineer with a Canadian Rockies self-drive holiday, and anyone looking for a shorter Rocky Mountaineer experience.

The route: Banff - Jasper (or Jasper - Banff) Journey time: 2 days by train Direction: Can be travelled in either direction

Journey through the Clouds

Journey through the Clouds follows the Canadian National Railway line through the Rockies, arriving not in Banff but in the wilder, less-commercialised national park town of Jasper. This route offers a slightly different flavour to First Passage to the West – the landscapes are arguably more remote, the wildlife more abundant, and the overall atmosphere that bit more rugged.

If you begin your journey in Vancouver, the train follows the Fraser River Valley into the arid canyon landscapes of the BC Interior before the scenery shifts dramatically on day two. Highlights include Pyramid Falls and the towering presence of Mount Robson. It’s the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies at nearly 4,000 metres, and so large it has its own weather system). You’ll also experience the extraordinary wilderness of Jasper National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site spanning 11,000 square kilometres.

Best for: Wildlife enthusiasts, travellers who prefer a quieter, less-touristy feel, those planning a Jasper holiday, and anyone drawn to truly raw, untouched wilderness.

The route: Vancouver - Kamloops - Jasper Journey time: 2 days by train with an overnight in Kamloops Direction: Can be travelled eastbound or westbound

First Passage to the West

This is Rocky Mountaineer's most popular and historically significant route, and for many travellers it's the obvious first choice. Following the original Canadian Pacific Railway line opened in 1885 – the very tracks that united a nation – First Passage to the West carries emotional and historical weight alongside its stunning scenery.

For those who wish to start the journey in Vancouver, the train traces the scenic Fraser and Thompson River valleys, transitioning from lush coastal forests into the dramatic canyon landscapes of British Columbia's interior. After an overnight in Kamloops, day two takes you through the Rockies in earnest: the Stoney Creek Bridge, the Continental Divide, Morant's Curve, and finally the mountain majesty of Banff National Park, one of Canada's most beloved destinations.

Wildlife sightings are common on this route, with bald eagles, ospreys, black bears, and occasionally grizzlies spotted along the way.

Best for: First-time visitors to Canada, history enthusiasts, those planning a Banff holiday, couples celebrating a special occasion, and anyone wanting the most iconic Rocky Mountaineer experience.

The route: Vancouver - Kamloops - Banff (or Lake Louise on select packages) Journey time: 2 days by train with an overnight in Kamloops Direction: Can be travelled eastbound or westbound

Rainforest to Gold Rush

If you want the most immersive and varied Rocky Mountaineer holiday, Rainforest to Gold Rush is in a class of its own. This three-day journey takes a completely different path from the other Canadian routes, heading north from Vancouver through the Sea to Sky corridor to the world-famous mountain resort of Whistler before venturing into landscapes that most travellers never reach.

From Whistler, the train continues into the remote Cariboo region, following the wild upper reaches of the Fraser River through territory steeped in the history of the 1860s Gold Rush. The contrast throughout the journey is extraordinary – coastal rainforest gives way to alpine meadows, dramatic river gorges, open cattle country, and finally the soaring peaks of the Rockies as the train pulls into Jasper.

The rewards of this journey, which can also be taken westbound, are significant: deeper immersion in British Columbia's wild interior, access to landscapes that feel truly off the beaten track, and an overnight stay in Whistler that allows time to enjoy one of Canada's most spectacular mountain towns.

Best for: Adventurous travellers, those who want maximum variety, anyone keen to combine Rocky Mountaineer with Whistler, and travellers who have already done one of the shorter routes and want to see more.

The route: Vancouver - Whistler - Quesnel - Jasper Journey time: 3 days by train with overnights in Whistler and Quesnel Direction: Can be travelled eastbound or westbound

Canyon Spirit

For travellers tempted to extend their North American adventure beyond Canada, Rocky Mountaineer's American Southwest experience – operated under the Canyon Spirit brand – offers a completely different but equally dramatic landscape. Travelling between Denver and Moab, with options extending to Salt Lake City, Canyon Spirit winds through sculpted canyons, desert plateaus, natural arches, and the vivid rock formations of Utah and Colorado.

Best for: Canyon Spirit is a compelling option for travellers who have already experienced one or more Canadian Rocky Mountaineer routes and are looking for something completely different – swapping snow-capped peaks and alpine forests for sculpted red rock canyons, vast desert plateaus, and natural arches. It suits the adventurous traveller who likes their luxury travel served with a sense of exploration and discovery.

The routes: Denver - Glenwood Springs - Moab Journey time: 2 days by train with an overnight in Glenwood Springs Direction: Can be travelled eastbound or westbound

Denver - Glenwood Springs - Moab -Salt Lake City Journey time: 3 days by train with overnights in Glenwood Springs and Moab Direction: Can be travelled eastbound or westbound
