Holiday Overview

The Grizzly Bears of Knight Inlet Lodge is a fantastic grizzly bear viewing programme offering 3, 4 or 5 night breaks, departing Vancouver or Campbell River, a perfect add-on to your Canada Holiday. Call our Canada experts today for full details.

Knight Inlet is a 100 km long fjord carved by glaciers in the coastal mountains. This pristine wilderness is the native habitat of the Grizzly Bear. Every spring when the grizzly bears come out of hibernation, they can be seen from a boat on the banks of Glendale Cove eating sedge grasses, mussels and barnacles that abound in the cove. In the fall the grizzly bears feed heavily on the returning salmon to the Glendale River and can be seen in large numbers from the specially constructed viewing platform.

Day 1 - Vancouver to Campbell River

Depart this afternoon from Vancouver International Airport (South Terminal) for a 40-minute flight to Campbell River. Upon arrival, transfer (included) to your overnight accommodation.

Day 2 - Campbell River to Knight Inlet

This morning, enjoy a scenic floatplane flight to Knight Inlet, a remote f jord and natural habitat of the grizzly bear. After a safety briefing and morning tea, join your guide in search of the many bears that frequent the area. During the spring and summer season viewing is done from small boats that allow you to get close without disturbing the bears. Usually there are 15 different grizzly bears and 5 different black bears feeding on sedge grasses, mussels and barnacles along the cove’s shoreline and in the estuary. There is more time for bear viewing after lunch, plus a cruise that takes in the natural wonders of Knight Inlet – tremendous waterfalls plummeting out of sheer rock faces, ancient glaciers with trails carving through the mountains and wild and remote rivers teeming with life.

Day 3 - Knight Inlet to Vancouver

Today you can personalise your day by choosing one of these excursions

Option 1. Extra Grizzly Bear Viewing Glendale Cove in Knight Inlet is home to one of the largest concentrations of grizzly (brown) bears in British Columbia, Canada.

Option 2. Interpretive Rainforest Walk The Kwalate valley is a 20-minute boat ride from the lodge. This is one of the few pristine watersheds left in this area. Over the past few years, Knight Inlet Lodge has been building a trail alongside the beautiful Kwalate River.

Option 3. Wildlife tracking to make plaster casts of animal prints Head into bear habitat for a slow drive down the old forestry roads looking for bear signs like day beds, bear trails, “rub” trees and tracks. If we find bear tracks or any other animal tracks, we can make a plaster cast of the print to take home. Option 4. Walk the Clouds Hike This tour is a bit different from the others as you will walk along a raised wooden boardwalk to a scenic lookout. With spectacular, panoramic views of Glendale Cove and Knight Inlet the lookout provides an eagle eye view of the local area.

Day 4 - Knight Inlet Lodge to Vancouver

Before saying farewell to the team at Knight Inlet, spend your morning sea kayaking or searching for grizzlies with your guide. If you are lucky, witness these powerful creatures as they quietly forage amongst the fresh sedge growth in the protected waters near the lodge. Mid morning, head back to the lodge for your return to Campbell River by floatplane. On arrival, transfer (included) to the local airport for your return flight to Vancouver.
