Cow Head, Newfoundland and Labrador

Cow Head has been known to be a central location to very rich fishing grounds, as well as being in the shipping and trading lanes since the 1800's.  Fishermen traded with the English trading company "Bird and Company" and Nova Scotia traders.  In the beginning, the main fisheries included herring, cod, and salmon with the lobster fishery being added around 1887.  In 1939, the start of the Co-op Movement was seen in Cow Head.  This co-op and it's successors succeeded until the late 1960's.

As visitors to Cow Head approach from the South, they will have a spectacular view of the Long Range Mountains to their right.  The Mountains, with it's renowned Western Brook Fiord, will hold your attention for the entire trip up the coast.  To their  left, visitors will see the Gulf of St. Lawrence, which is part of the Atlantic Ocean.  As you drive towards Cow Head, you will come within 10 metres of the Ocean at times.  There is always an opportunity to see fisherman in their boats or see whales as they migrate North or South.

Cow Head is home to one of the longest sandy beaches in Newfoundland (approx 10kms) as well as a large area of sand dunes. It also has panoramic views of the Long Range Mountains of Gros Morne
