Rocky Mountaineer: Rainforest to Gold Rush

Westbound - Jasper | Quesnel | Whistler | Vancouver

Eastbound - Vancouver | Whistler | Quesnel | Jasper

Rainforest to Gold Rush is the longest and most scenically diverse route, linking Vancouver with Jasper National Park over three days. With overnight stops in Whistler and the historic gold rush town of Quesnel, the journey passes through an extraordinary range of landscapes – from Pacific rainforest and sea-to-sky coastline, through the sun-baked Fraser Canyon, across the open ranchlands of the Cariboo Plateau, and into the glacier-carved peaks of the Canadian Rockies. Travelling entirely in daylight, this Rocky Mountaineer trip follows corridors once walked by gold prospectors during the great Fraser River and Cariboo Gold Rushes of the mid-1800s.

2026 is your last opportunity to experience this route, as it will not be operating from 2027 onwards.

WESTBOUND

DAY 1 – JASPER TO QUESNEL

Your Rainforest to Gold Rush adventure begins in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, as the train winds westward through spectacular mountain terrain, past pristine lakes and thundering waterfalls. The awesome sight of Mount Robson – the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies – sets the tone early, before the landscape opens out into the vast forests and rolling ranchlands of northern British Columbia. It's a journey of contrasts from the very first mile.

DAY 2 – QUESNEL TO WHISTLER

Leaving Quesnel, one of the Rainforest to Gold Rush route's most dramatic highlights unfolds as the train heads south through increasingly wild terrain. Sheer canyon walls rise on one side while milky-green glacial lakes shimmer on the other, before the train threads through the Pemberton Valley alongside the stunning Anderson and Seton Lakes. Every bend in the track brings something new into view.

DAY 3 – WHISTLER TO VANCOUVER

The final leg of this Whistler to Vancouver stretch saves some of its best scenery for last. Towering cliffs, deep river canyons and historic bridges give way to the breathtaking fjord of Howe Sound, framed by the soaring Coast Mountains. It's a fittingly spectacular finale before the train rolls into the vibrant city of Vancouver.

EASTBOUND

DAY 1 – VANCOUVER TO WHISTLER

The Rainforest to Gold Rush route begins in spectacular fashion, tracing the fjord of Howe Sound as Vancouver's skyline fades behind you. Towering cliffs, deep river canyons and historic bridges line the way as the train climbs through the Sea-to-Sky Corridor – one of the most celebrated stretches of the Rocky Mountaineer Whistler to Jasper train route. The day ends in the world-famous mountain resort of Whistler, where an overnight stay gives you time to explore the village at your own pace.

DAY 2 – WHISTLER TO QUESNEL

Departing Whistler, the train follows the Pemberton Valley north, gliding alongside the shimmering glacial waters of Anderson and Seton Lakes – among the Rainforest to Gold Rush route's most striking highlights. The scenery grows wilder as sheer canyon walls close in and the landscape shifts dramatically from alpine meadows to the sun-baked, arid ranchlands of the Cariboo. By day's end, you'll arrive in Quesnel – Canada's gold rush capital and a town that still echoes with frontier history.

DAY 3 – QUESNEL TO JASPER

The final day of this Vancouver to Jasper journey delivers its most breathtaking scenery yet. The train climbs steadily through the forests of northern British Columbia, past pristine lakes and cascading waterfalls, before the towering bulk of Mount Robson announces your arrival into the mountains. It's a fittingly dramatic finale, ending in the alpine gem of Jasper.
