My recent trip to Newfoundland was nothing short of unforgettable—a journey through Canada’s rugged east coast, packed with wildlife encounters, coastal charm, and some of the best seafood I’ve ever tasted.

I kicked things off in St. John’s, Newfoundland, staying at the ultra-modern JAG Hotel—a chic boutique stay featuring its own concert hall and a hidden-away spa that felt like a luxury retreat. This vibrant capital city buzzed with energy, especially at night on Water Street, where live music, friendly pubs, and fresh Atlantic seafood made every evening feel like a celebration.
A major highlight was visiting Cape Spear National Historic Site, the easternmost point in North America. Watching whales breach in the Atlantic Ocean while standing on dramatic cliffs was a true “pinch-me” moment. Not far from there, I headed to Bonavista, where I saw thousands of puffins near the historic lighthouse and Dungeon Provincial Park—a surreal coastal landscape that felt straight out of a BBC nature documentary.
I stayed at the peaceful Fisher’s Loft Inn, nestled in Port Rexton. Between hiking scenic coastal trails, cycling quiet backroads, and eating what was arguably the best lobster in Newfoundland, I felt deeply connected to the land and its rhythm.
Next stop: Trinity, Newfoundland—a charming, historic fishing village that felt like stepping back in time. From a working blacksmith to handmade chocolates and legendary local ice cream, everything here was delightfully authentic.
The experience of a lifetime came with Sea of Whales Adventures, where our whale watching tour brought us within metres of a pod of sperm whales. We also spotted bald eagles, albatross, and playful porpoises along the way. After a cosy stay at the Clarenville Inn, we hit the Irish Loop Drive, one of Newfoundland’s most scenic coastal routes.
A must-visit along the way was the Colony of Avalon in Ferryland, where I learned about Sara Kirke, one of North America’s earliest and most successful female entrepreneurs. The mix of history and oceanfront beauty was unbeatable.
The last leg of my journey brought me to my favourite stay: the stunning Cliffs Edge Retreat, perched above the sea with views that went on forever. I soaked in a private hot tub overlooking the Atlantic, watching seals play below—a truly magical moment that summed up the raw beauty of Newfoundland.
On my final day, I was lucky enough to spot minke and humpback whales just offshore before heading back to Quidi Vidi Village. I wrapped things up with a local pint at the Quidi Vidi Brewery and dinner at The Vu, where I officially got “screeched in”—a beloved Newfoundland tradition involving a shot of rum, a few salty local sayings, and yes, kissing a codfish!
From epic whale watching and puffin colonies to cozy coastal inns, rich maritime history, and the friendliest people in Canada, Newfoundland is a dream destination for nature lovers, foodies, and adventure seekers alike. Whether you're tracing the cliffs of Bonavista or relaxing in a hot tub under the stars, every moment here is an unforgettable story.
I left my heart in Newfoundland—and I only wish I’d stayed longer.
