Day 2 - Canyon Spirit – Denver to Glenwood Springs

Embark on your Canyon Spirit journey from the picturesque Denver, Colorado. Heading west, you’ll be greeted by your first engineering marvel – the Big 10 Curve. As the train ascends, it will cross the Continental Divide through the Moffat Tunnel. Journey along the Colorado River, marvelling at the colossal beauty of Byers and Gore canyons. Keep an eye out for wildlife as you pass through Glenwood Canyon, on the Upper Colorado River. Finish your day in Glenwood Springs, where you’ll unwind overnight in a cosy hotel, included as part of your journey.

Day 3 - Canyon Spirit – Glenwood Springs to Moab

As you head southwest, you’ll begin your day surrounded by mountain vistas and desert cliffs. Rugged landscapes lead to the striking 15-mile De Beque Canyon, renowned for its stair-step cliffs of sedimentary rock layers. Continuing west, you’ll encounter Mount Garfield, the pinnacle of the Book Cliffs. Spanning 200 miles from east to west, these sandstone cliffs and mountains mark your transition from Colorado to Utah. Striking red rock formations signal your approach to Moab, the gateway to Utah’s Mighty 5 National Parks.

Day 4 - Canyon Spirit – Moab to Salt Lake City

After a restful night in Moab, wake up to a morning of exploration at your own pace whether it’s soaking in the desert sunrise or discovering the town’s hidden gems. Once onboard the train, journey past the last of the scenic Book Cliffs before winding through Castle Gate and ascending through the stunning Price Canyon, crossing the historic Soldier Summit via the Gilluly Loops. From Thistle Tunnel, travel through Red Canyon, taking in breathtaking views of the Wasatch Mountains before arriving in Salt Lake City via Spanish Fork.

Day 5 - Day 5 Salt Lake City to Jackson Hole

Today, collect your hire car and begin your scenic drive from Salt Lake City to Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The route takes you through the heart of the American West, with stunning views of mountain ranges, winding rivers, and wide-open plains. As you travel north, consider stopping along the way in charming towns like Evanston or Alpine for a bite to eat or a quick stroll.

Arriving in Jackson Hole, you’ll find yourself surrounded by dramatic natural beauty, nestled between the Teton and Gros Ventre mountain ranges. This lively Western town offers a blend of rustic charm and upscale sophistication, with art galleries, boutiques, and restaurants lining the historic Town Square. Jackson Hole also serves as the ideal base for exploring the nearby Grand Teton National Park or planning an adventure into Yellowstone.

Day 7 - Jackson Hole to Yellowstone

Depart Jackson Hole and embark on a breathtaking drive to Yellowstone National Park, a journey that promises spectacular scenery at every turn. As you head north, you’ll pass through the majestic landscapes of Grand Teton National Park, where jagged mountain peaks rise dramatically above pristine lakes and alpine meadows. Keep your camera ready you may spot moose, bison, or even bald eagles along the roadside.

The route winds past the shores of Jackson Lake and follows the Snake River, offering countless opportunities to stop and soak in the views or enjoy a short hike. After about two hours on the road, you'll reach the South Entrance of Yellowstone, where geothermal wonders, wildlife sightings, and iconic landmarks like Old Faithful await.

Day 8 - Yellowstone

Yellowstone National Park is a natural wonderland and the crown jewel of America’s national parks. Spanning over 2.2 million acres across Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho, Yellowstone is a land of dramatic landscapes, geothermal marvels, and incredible wildlife.

No visit is complete without seeing Old Faithful, the park’s most famous geyser, which erupts roughly every 90 minutes in a spectacular display. Explore the colourful Grand Prismatic Spring, the largest hot spring in the United States, with its vibrant rainbow-like hues. For breathtaking views, head to the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, where waterfalls plunge into the canyon’s pastel-coloured walls.

Day 9 - Yellowstone to Cody

Today, your journey continues as you depart Yellowstone National Park and make your way east to the historic town of Cody, Wyoming. This scenic drive offers a stunning transition from the geothermal wonders and dense forests of Yellowstone to the wide-open plains and dramatic cliffs of the Wild West.

As you travel along the Sylvan Pass, take in breathtaking views of alpine peaks, glacial lakes, and sweeping valleys. The route winds past Yellowstone Lake, offering several scenic overlooks perfect for a photo stop or a moment to soak in the serenity.

Once you exit the park’s East Entrance, the landscape opens up to reveal the striking beauty of the Shoshone National Forest, America’s first national forest. Towering rock formations and winding rivers accompany you along the Buffalo Bill Scenic Byway, a route once described by Teddy Roosevelt as “the most beautiful 50 miles in America.”

Day 10 - Cody to Buffalo

Today, continue your scenic journey across northern Wyoming as you travel from Cody to the charming town of Buffalo. This drive takes you through a diverse landscape of rolling plains, historic towns, and the dramatic peaks of the Bighorn Mountains, offering one of the most picturesque routes in the state.

As you leave Cody, consider a brief stop in Greybull, a small town with a classic Western feel and an interesting aviation museum. From there, make your way toward Shell Canyon, a true hidden gem. Take time to stretch your legs at Shell Falls, where an impressive waterfall crashes through ancient granite rock complete with a short walking trail and interpretive signs.

Next comes the ascent into the Bighorn Mountains via Highway 14, also known as the Bighorn Scenic Byway. This dramatic mountain pass climbs to elevations over 9,000 feet, offering panoramic views, alpine meadows, and opportunities to spot wildlife like mule deer and moose. The byway is a favourite among photographers and nature lovers alike.

Once you descend from the mountains, you'll arrive in Buffalo, a historic town located at the base of the Bighorns. Day 11 - Buffalo to Deadwood

Your journey continues today as you leave the charming frontier town of Buffalo and head east into the Dakotas, with your destination set for Deadwood, South Dakota a legendary gold rush town nestled in the heart of the Black Hills.

The drive takes you across the wide-open plains of northern Wyoming, where rolling hills and expansive skies create a sense of true Western freedom. As you travel along Interstate 90, you’ll pass through historic towns like Gillette and Sundance, both offering optional stops to stretch your legs or grab a bite to eat.

A great optional detour is Devils Tower National Monument, just north of Sundance. This striking geological formation rises dramatically from the prairie and is sacred to many Native Americans. It’s a fantastic spot for a photo stop or a short walk along the base trail.

As you cross into South Dakota, the scenery shifts once again forested hills replace open prairie as you enter the Black Hills National Forest. The winding roads lead you into Deadwood, a town brimming with Wild West history. Once a booming gold rush settlement, Deadwood today is a blend of preserved 19th-century charm and lively modern-day attractions, including museums, saloons, and reenactments of infamous outlaw shootouts.

Day 13 - Deadwood to Badlands

Today, continue your journey through South Dakota as you travel from the historic town of Deadwood toward the awe-inspiring landscapes of Badlands National Park. This drive offers a captivating blend of history, natural beauty, and striking geological formations.

Leaving the pine-covered hills of Deadwood, you’ll follow scenic highways through the Black Hills region, with opportunities to detour or pause at key landmarks. Consider a stop in Rapid City, often referred to as the gateway to the Black Hills. Here you’ll find museums, public art displays, and local cafes perfect for a short break.

As you continue southeast, the terrain begins to shift dramatically. Rolling hills give way to a surreal and rugged landscape as you approach Badlands National Park. The road into the park offers a spectacular entrance, with layers of sharply eroded buttes, spires, and pinnacles rising from the prairie floor. Day 14 - Badlands to Cheyenne

Today, your journey continues as you leave the dramatic landscapes of Badlands National Park behind and travel southwest toward Cheyenne, the capital of Wyoming. This long but rewarding drive offers a fascinating glimpse into the heart of the American prairie, passing through wide-open grasslands, small Western towns, and vast skies that seem to stretch on forever.

As you depart the Badlands, consider a stop at the nearby Minuteman Missile National Historic Site, where you can learn about the Cold War era and the region’s role in U.S. nuclear history. Continuing along Interstate 90, you'll pass through Rapid City once more before heading into the open plains of western South Dakota and into eastern Wyoming.

The scenery is classic American West sweeping fields, distant mountains on the horizon, and the occasional cluster of grazing antelope or wildflowers along the roadside. You may wish to break up the journey in Newcastle or Lusk, quiet towns that offer a glimpse into small-town life on the plains.

As you approach Cheyenne, the landscape begins to shift, with rolling hills leading into the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Founded as a key stop on the Union Pacific Railroad, Cheyenne is steeped in frontier history and is home to the world-famous Cheyenne Frontier Days rodeo. Day 15 - Cheyenne to Denver

Today marks the final leg of your road trip as you journey south from Cheyenne back to Denver, Colorado. This pleasant drive takes you through the open plains of southeastern Wyoming and into northern Colorado, offering wide horizons and a relaxing change of pace after your adventures in the national parks.

The route follows Interstate 25, a smooth and direct drive of around two hours, with optional stops along the way. Consider pausing in Fort Collins, a lively college town known for its craft breweries, historic Old Town, and scenic riverwalk. It’s a great spot for a coffee break or a stroll through local shops.
