There are trips you enjoy… and then there are trips that completely sweep you up in the atmosphere of a place. My time in Calgary during Stampede season, paired with a breathtaking escape to Banff, firmly sits in the latter.

From the moment I arrived in Calgary, the city was buzzing. Cowboy boots, hats, and an infectious sense of celebration filled every street corner. I dived straight into the spirit of it all with an afternoon at Spanky’s Saloon, where the Stampede party was already in full swing – live music, great drinks, and a crowd that made you feel like you belonged instantly.
As the energy built, I made my way to Stampede Park for dinner at the Stampede Cellar, a more refined contrast to the lively chaos outside. It was the perfect prelude to the evening show – an unforgettable spectacle of rodeo action, music, and jaw-dropping performances that truly captured the heart of the “Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.”
The following day offered a different perspective of Calgary. A guided experience with Calgary Walks & bus tours brought the city’s history and character to life, from its frontier roots to its modern skyline. A trip up the Calgary Tower gave me panoramic views stretching all the way to the Rockies – a reminder of what was still to come.
Back at Stampede Park, I enjoyed a relaxed lunch in the Wine Garden before diving into the thrill of the afternoon rodeo – raw, authentic, and full of adrenaline. A guided visit to Elbow River Camp added cultural depth, sharing the stories and traditions of the First Nations communities. The day wrapped up beautifully with dinner at Model Milk, where creative, locally inspired dishes provided a stylish end to a very full day.
If Calgary was all energy and excitement, Banff was its serene, awe-inspiring counterpart.
A full-day sightseeing tour took me from the city skyline deep into the Canadian Rockies, and the shift in scenery was nothing short of spectacular. Towering peaks, glacial lakes, and endless forests unfolded at every turn.
Banff itself was charming and vibrant, nestled perfectly within the mountains. Stops at Lake Minnewanka and Two Jack Lake were postcard-perfect – crystal-clear waters reflecting dramatic mountain backdrops. The Banff Gondola was a definite highlight, lifting me high above the valley for sweeping views that are almost impossible to put into words.
With some free time along Banff Avenue, I soaked up the atmosphere – part alpine village, part adventure hub – before heading to dinner at Brazen in the Mount Royal Hotel, where hearty flavours and a warm setting made for a perfect mountain evening.
On my final day, Calgary once again proved it’s far more than just a gateway to the Rockies. A walk to Studio Bell, home of Canada’s music scene, was a fascinating and interactive experience, followed by a visit to the immersive Sam Centre, which deepened my appreciation of the Stampede’s history and legacy.
One of the standout moments was a tasting tour at Calgary Farmers’ Market West – a real treat for the senses, showcasing local flavours and artisan produce. It felt like a true taste of the region, both literally and culturally.
A visit to Heritage Park rounded off the trip, stepping back in time to experience Western Canada’s past before heading to the airport for my overnight flight home.
This trip was the perfect blend of high-energy city experiences and tranquil natural beauty. Calgary during Stampede is unlike anywhere else – vibrant, welcoming, and full of character – while Banff delivers once-in-a-lifetime scenery that stays with you long after you’ve left.
If you’re looking for a holiday that combines culture, adventure, and unforgettable landscapes, this is one that truly delivers – I highly recommend adding a 3-day Calgary Stampede experience to your holiday.
