The humble early 19th-century trading post of Jasper was founded by adventurous Montreal fur traders on a safer N route through the Rockies, and later became a popular base for mountaineers and explorers. The arrival of the railway at the beginning of the 20th century attracted increasing numbers of visitors, prompting the Dominion Government to create a National Park.

Considerable development over subsequent decades has resulted in a flat, self-contained, unsophisticated low-rise town measuring just 2 miles by 1½ miles and built beside a dual carriageway; shops and services are arrayed along its length, centring on the railway station. A hospital, fire and police stations, schools and library remind visitors that this is as much a working town as tourist resort, and its quiet charm and community feel reflect this.
